My two part article 'Alphamagic Squares' appeared in Abacus, a since discontinued computer-oriented quarterly, in 1986. Part I can be found here (13MB), and Part II here (8.5MB).

A Wikipedia article on  Alphamagic Squares is also available.

Note that my attribution of the opening quote to Martin Gardner was a mistake. Various websites give the author of the anagram as Melvin O. Wellman of Michigan, 1948, although I could find no exact reference.
[For a couple of related anagrams see Mathematical Wordplay / New Merology / Spanagrams].

Some readers may also be interested to learn that a second copy of The Origin of Tree Worship has since come to light. It was sold recently at auction to a private collector for $50,000.
